‘I still don’t like those machines. They’re trying to do us out of a job.’ Cleo tapped her fingers on the clean countertop at four in the afternoon. The line to the counter had gone and was snaking in the other direction as each person waited for Connor to teach them. Ginny was certain that she’d seen William borrow books, return them, and then line up with more.

‘Just to make sure I’ve got it all clear in my head…’ she’d overheard the old man telling Connor. And Connor hadn’t argued or huffed; instead, simply going through it again.

‘I’m sure people will still chat, but it means people in a hurry don’t need to wait. Plus, it’s a pity not to make the most of Connor while he’s here.’

‘What do you mean? Where’s he going?’

‘I don’t know, but I assume somewhere. He’s eighteen and very bright. He must be looking at other options. He has so much potential.’

Cleo opened her mouth and then shut it again, suddenly contrite. ‘I hadn’t thought of him like that. He comes from Halton Park, you see. And most of them… well… there’s a cycle of poverty that’s hard to break. I suppose I just assumed the worst. Now I feel terrible.’

‘I didn’t mean to make you feel bad. I’d just like to support him while he’s here. So that he gets something out of it.’

Cleo swallowed. ‘You’re right. I… I’m pleased Marigold hired you. I wasn’t sure to begin with, but she made a good decision. The place already looks so much better with the cushions and the fresh flowers.’

‘I liked the waiting room at the surgery to be comfortable and relaxing. So, I thought I’d try the same here.’

‘You’ve done a good job,’ Cleo admitted.

Ginny chewed her lip. She’d avoided asking too many direct questions about the murder, especially to Cleo and Andrea, who were happy to gossip for hours on one small detail. But despite several more attempts to get into the stack again, she’d no success, and JM had called earlier to say the office break-in had had to be aborted because Tuppence couldn’t find the right YouTube video to pick the lock. All in all, it hadn’t been a successful day.

It had to be worth a try.

‘Cleo, you’ve been here a while. Do you remember Sophie Hudson?’

‘Of course. Lovely girl, she was. Very bright. Why?’

‘I heard that Louisa accused her of destroying documents in the stack. I was just curious if you knew anything about it.’

Cleo didn’t blink. ‘There was nothing to know. Louisa and Sophie were always at loggerheads over the banking not balancing, and on the budget. And Sophie would come at least once a month to file everything in the stack, but as for her destroying documents. No… I never believed it for a minute.’

Which is exactly what Marigold said.

‘So, there was no mention of what the documents might have been?’

‘Goodness, I’ve got no idea. Besides, it was a moot point. Anyway, we’ve got Harold back now and
